Creator of ACU ceremonial mace recognised in exhibition

The works of George Ingham, designer and creator of Australian Catholic University's Ceremonial Mace, have been recognised in an exhibition at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra.

The exhibition showcases the life works of George Ingham who came to Australia in 1982 to establish the wood workshop at the Canberra School of Art. George created the body of work, including an array of contemporary furniture designs and the ACU Ceremonial Mace, during his 20-year tenure as head of the workshop.

In universities, a mace is used on ceremonial occasions as a symbol of institutional authority and it is carried, in procession, in front of the Chancellor as a symbolic weapon of protection.

The Australia National University generously donated the Ceremonial Mace to Australian Catholic University.

The exhibition will feature at the ANU School of Art Gallery until 31 October 2009.
