Students for Awareness

Students at the University's Melbourne Campus are trying to make a difference in third world communities by promoting awareness on child trafficking and fair trade.

Australian Catholic University Students for Awareness (ACUSA) recently held a Christmas stall selling goods handcrafted by women from around the world along with Fair Trade coffee and chocolate.

The ACUSA Fair Trade campaign aims to continue the positive work currently underway across Australia, where spending on Fair Trade products is expected to surpass $20 million in 2008, marking Australia as among the world's fastest growing fair trade markets.

ACUSA also recently facilitated a forum on child trafficking with guest speaker Stancea Vichie from the Good Shepherd Centre for Justice and Fair Trade. The forum was well attended, displaying the dedication of Melbourne Campus students to topical issues.

ACUSA member, Kathy Hives said that, "ACUSA provides an opportunity to get involved and make others aware of issues such as poverty, fair trade and human trafficking as well as asylum seeker and refugee issues, and while educating students in what they can do in their everyday lives to make a difference."

Geraldine Butler, Campus Life Coordinator said, "These students bring so much energy, enthusiasm and fun to meetings that we all leave renewed and energised. They often help me put life back into perspective!"
