Volunteer nurse receives ACU scholarship

Canberra Campus nursing student, Natalie Margach, has been awarded the 2009 Laurie Daniels Scholarship.

The Laurie Daniels Scholarship is awarded annually to a student entering their second year of a Bachelor of Nursing Program, and who has demonstrated a commitment to the ethos of the University.

Already an enrolled nurse, Natalie decided to return to study in 2009 to become a qualified registered nurse. She chose ACU for the bridging program it provides for enrolled nurses.

“I like that I am surrounded by my peers,” Natalie said. “We have all worked in hospitals and are familiar with each others’ experiences and knowledge.”

In 2008, Natalie spent two-and-a-half months volunteering at an orphanage in Uganda where she worked for the International Support Aid (ISA) Organisation ‘CARE4Kids’.

During this time, Natalie gave general health assessments, treated the wounds of children and gave basic training to local staff.

Her commitment to volunteering and her passion for nursing in developing nations won her the 2009 Laurie Daniels Scholarship. The Scholarship was established by donations from family and friends through the ACU Foundation to commemorate the life of Laurie Daniels, a founding member of the University Senate, active supporter of ACU, and a life-long advocate for Catholic education.

“I feel extremely blessed to receive this scholarship,” Natalie said. “The money will go towards the volunteer expeditions I have planned in the near future.”

Natalie plans to continue her volunteering on a series of short trips to Africa each year.
