Naming of new building at Brisbane Campus

A ceremony was held last week to officially open the newest building at the Brisbane Campus (McAuley at Banyo).

The Peter W Sheehan Building was named after the University’s former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter W Sheehan AO, who held the position from 1998 to 2008.  Professor Sheehan said he felt humbled by the new building being named in his honour.

“I am deeply conscious of the history that such recognition establishes,” Professor Sheehan said. “I feel proud to be a part of the building’s history as it unfolds. The building is beautiful, wonderfully constructed and designed, and I know it will serve the University very well in the future.”

The Peter W Sheehan building is a welcome addition to the University with student numbers at the Brisbane Campus increasing substantially this year.  The building houses two new nursing laboratories, tutorial rooms, the flexible learning centre and extensive general office space.  It will accommodate for students of health sciences, exercise science, midwifery, nursing and the new physiotherapy program being offered next year. The building will also provide an art exhibition space.

The first female Vice-Chancellor in Australia, Emeritus Professor Di Yerbury AO, attended the ceremony and donated a painting for the new building. 

The building opening and naming brought together the University’s Chancellor Brother Julian McDonald CFC AO and Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Craven along with The Very Rev. John Bathersby, Archbishop of Brisbane, The Very Rev. James Foley, Bishop of Cairns, and many other distinguished guests.
