Expert panel to discuss the ethics of war
Is war a vital evil in the protection of human rights? Should scientists take responsibility for the weapons they create that enable grand scale destruction? What role does politics play and who really benefits from conflict?
Join the heated debate, led by guest speaker Dr John Forge, as a diverse expert panel discusses the ethics of war at Australian Catholic University’s inaugural ACU Voice public speaker event.
Keynote speaker
Dr John Forge, winner of the 2010 ACU Eureka Prize for Research in Ethics, argues that scientists carry a moral obligation for the sometimes destructive consequences of their research – a topic he examines in his latest book The Responsible Scientist: A Philosophical Inquiry.
After being educated in England and the United States, Dr Forge came to Australia in 1979 to develop a teaching career in 1974. He has taught in the departments of History and Philosophy of Science/Science and Technology Studies and is an Honourary Associate at Sydney University.
The former editor of Metascience and winner of the 2009 David Harold Tribe Philosophy Award, Dr Forge’s most current research is concerned with examining the conditions under which is it is acceptable for scientists to engage in weapons and war research.
