Social Justice Forum

More than 150 secondary school students from across Sydney assembled at the North Sydney Campus on Wednesday 27 May for a forum addressing social justice issues.

The Social Justice Youth Forum provided students with the opportunity to engage and explore social justice issues by participating in a wide range of workshops on topics including global poverty, homelessness and Indigenous issues.

Young Australian of the Year for 2007, Tania Major, delivered a keynote address and empowered students by challenging them to make a difference in their local communities. Australian Catholic University student and Research and Project Officer for the Justice and Peace Office at the Archdiocese of Sydney, Chantelle Ogilvie, also shared her experience of social injustices and inspired students to make a difference.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Gabrielle McMullen said the forum inspired youth with a strong sense of social responsibility, concern for the moral and ethical dimensions of life and dignity of all human beings.

"It is in the spirit of this message to us that we conduct our social justice forums and that so many of the University’s other initiatives related to transformational education are undertaken," Professor McMullen said. "The Social Justice Youth Forum provides us with a most powerful message promoting social justice to the young people from local schools and to the University community."

A Social Justice Youth Forum was also held at the Brisbane Campus on Friday 29 May with speakers Tania Major and School of Business lecturer Ellen McBarron.
