"I’m really excited; it’s a good stepping stone because it’s an international company with branches in Europe, America and Asia."
In her second year of Environmental Science at the North Sydney Campus, Sarah went to work on a mine site in far north Queensland as part of Rio Tinto’s vacation work program."After some of the field trips, especially visiting the mines, I got really interested in the mining and regeneration side of things and wanted to do some work experience.
I was gone for the whole of the summer break, so I didn’t get a holiday, but it was worth it and really beneficial to get that practical experience leading into my final year. It really helped me gain a better understanding of the topics we were studying."
Months out from completing her final year of study, Rio Tinto offered Sarah a place in their graduate program where she will monitor water samples, air quality, greenhouse gas emissions and revegetation.
"I’m really excited; it’s a good stepping stone because it’s an international company with branches in Europe, America and Asia. I’m hoping to get over to America and Canada because they have diamond and coal mines there with a lot of environmental issues surrounding them. And it will be good to mix work and travel."
