Multiplying excellence
As Director of the Mathematics Teaching and Learning Centre and Mathematics and Literacy Education Research Flagship at ACU National, Professor Doug Clarke has made significant contributions to mathematics education nationally.
Professor Clarke has researched a number of large projects including the recent National Numeracy Review, and the Early Numeracy Research Project, a $1.4 million joint initiative.
"I was particularly proud to be part of the team in the Early Numeracy Research Project that had such an impact on students and teachers," said Professor Clarke.
"It was demonstrated to be highly successful by the results from interviews with students, and observing the change in practice among teachers," he said.
His latest project involves working with 32 Catholic schools in Victoria, interviewing and surveying students and teachers, and providing professional development programs for teachers to enhance practice and pedagogical content knowledge, and make maths more relevant and enjoyable for students.
"A major benefit of having the Flagship at ACU National is that we really try to connect what we learn to our teaching of Education students so they’re keeping up with the cutting edge research," he said.
"We maintain particularly close links with practitioners as well, so the research is grounded in experience. This is definitely our greatest strength."
