Helping children in Nepal

Pat is the founder of the charity, The Centre for Learning and Children’s Rights Inc (CLCR). Pat describes Nepal as “vastly beautiful” yet “the third poorest country in the world”, and says many young people lack any education.

“They are often reduced to begging and a life on the streets in an effort to survive,” Pat said. “Many children who do attend schools are severely physically abused, and most teachers lack formal teaching quliaifications.”

CLCR’s programs help support two orphanages in Kathmandu, helping create a first aid centre, sewing and tailoring centre, sports department and seed planting agricultural sustainability project.

CLCR has helped provide professional training for more than 400 Nepali teachers, through its “Disciplining children with dignity program”, based on creating awareness, among parents and educators, of the damaging effects of violence in schools, and fostering successful alternatives including conflict resolution skills.

CLCR’s Heartland Children’s Academy (HCA) School project offers scholarship opportunities to underpriviliged children within Kathmandu and other parts of Nepal, providing both academic and Nepali life skills.

The coeducational school currently serves more than 200 students, aged from about 4 to 16 years, and has 20 teachers, a library, three-storey class room block, small hostel and about half a hectare of land for further expansion.
