Caring for youth

With his colleagues at the Institute of Child Protection Studies, Tim Moore recently submitted a report on children acting as carers for parents struggling with drug and alcohol issues and has completed a study on young people transitioning from life in juvenile detention centers.

“I had done a lot of work with a range of disadvantaged young people and felt this was an opportunity to find out more about what was actually going on: to stand back and develop ways to best address their needs,” said Mr Moore.

Mr Moore first became interested in the field while volunteering with various organisations, and spent 10 years as a youth worker before coming to study at ACU National.

“I quickly found that kids who were the most disadvantaged were most likely to experiences a whole range of challenges and difficulties but were also getting the least support,” said Mr Moore.

“The research we do at the Institute is really about finding the best practical ways to make a difference for these kids,” he said.

Mr Moore has recently been awarded the first PhD Scholarship through the Institute, which is being sponsored by the Canberra Southern Cross Club. He will begin his thesis exploring how to best conduct research with vulnerable children this year.
