Midwifery

Faculty of Health Sciences

School of Nursing & Midwifery (Queensland)

Midwifery goes beyond the birth of babies. Core midwifery skills include managing normal pregnancy and childbirth and providing effective postnatal maternal and newborn care.

All women require care during pregnancy and childbirth which is not only safe but also meets their individual psychological, emotional, physical and social needs, including spiritual needs.

This course enables graduates to be eligible for endorsement as a midwife upon completion. Traditionally, a midwife has had to undertake a three-year nursing course and then completed a postgraduate qualification in midwifery.

This course aims to educate individuals to work as competent midwives at a beginning level. Any maternity setting will be open for graduates to enter. This is according to the internationally defined role and scope of practice of the midwife.

Professional recognition

Eligible graduates can apply for registration and/or seek certification with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (from 1 July 2010). This applies to graduates in all Australian states as well as selected countries.

Hear from our graduate Narelle Haw who is currently working as a midwife in Epworth Freemasons Hospital Maternity Unit.

ACU also offers a range of nursing and paramedicine courses.
