The School of Exercise Science has a strong commitment to research that aligns with the Mission and vision of the University. Much of the School’s research activity occurs within the Centre of Physical Activity Across the Lifespan (CoPAAL). CoPAAL is a Faculty Research Centre based in the School of Exercise Science and plays a pivotal role in overseeing the School’s research direction and productivity. To achieve international recognition for excellence in research, the research activity of CoPAAL is targeted within two major research strengths:
(1) Exercise in Preventive Medicine
(2) Sports Science

In 2010/2011, CoPAAL was instrumental in establishing several innovative research links, most notably a co-funded PhD Scholarship with Collingwood Football Club and a cotutelle PhD agreement with the University of Avignon, France. Other international research outcomes in 2010/2011 included Visiting Research Fellows from France, Spain and Denmark. In 2010, CoPAAL also took on its first Postdoctoral Research Fellow who was integral in securing Research Support Team funding for the School. CoPAAL continues to provide valuable research training opportunities to ensure Postgraduate and Honours research students are rigorous and ethical in their research behaviour and outcomes. In 2010, CoPAAL Director, Professor Geraldine Naughton, was also a major contributor to an Active Play DVD launched by Hon Maxine Morand, Minister for Children and Early Childhood Development. The DVD was developed by the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Filling the Gaps Team, of which Professor Naughton was a member.
