New South Wales Exercise Scientist wins prestigious NSW Sporting Injuries Committee award
Dr David Greene awarded prestigious NSW Sports Safety Award
The NSW Sports Safety Awards are coordinated by the New South Wales government to recognise outstanding achievement in the research and prevention of sports related injuries and the adoption of safe sport practices. These awards are a fundamental component of the Sporting Injuries Committee's legislative responsibility to increase awareness of sporting injuries as well as encourage sports practices and research that reduce the risk and impact of such injuries in NSW.
The NSW Sports Safety Awards are awarded at an annual gala event and have been held since 1997. The annual New South Wales Sporting Injuries Committee awards were held on Friday November 18, 2011.
The most prestigious of these awards is the F.E. Johnson Memorial Award for the most outstanding research contribution to injury prevention in sport. The award is the highest recognition for excellence in research and carries a $20,000 prize to assist in international research. This award has not been given for four years. Dr David Greene was awarded this grant in 2011, upon his first nomination: Musculoskeletal health in active young populations.
Dr Greene, from the School of Exercise Science in Strathfield, reviewed more than 500 bone scans to identify markers of injury risk in young athletes by examining tibial and radial bone characteristics and nutrition levels. Dr Greene is one of the first researchers in Australia to look at bone strength using 3-dimensional bone-imaging technology. The excellence in this research is recognised by this fellowship.
