Rugby League Reads

In partnership with Rugby League’s One Community and ACU Lecturer and Boys Education and Literacy expert, Suzan Hirsch, Rugby League Reads combines children’s interest in Rugby League with in-class Syllabus-focused magazines, complementary teaching resources and a set of home readers, featuring players and mascots from across the 16 NRL Clubs.

The resources which have been authored by Suzan Hirsch uses key education and literacy strategies and research in its magazines, complementary teaching resources and home readers, which are designed to be used in conjunction with existing school and classroom literature and resources. As part of the Rugby League Reads program, a complementary research study is being conducted by the Australian Catholic University to assess the benefits of the resources within 11 Primary Schools across rural and metropolitan NSW.

The research, which is due to be published in Term 4, 2010, will evaluate the impact of the program on the attitudes of Primary School students towards reading and the shift in student engagement in literacy activities when using interest based texts and tasks compared to traditionally based classroom texts.

Rugby Leagues Reads resources can be ordered online at www.rloc.com.au. The Years 3-6 magazines and accompanying teaching resources are available to schools only and free of charge, while the K-2 set of eight home readers can be purchased by schools or individuals for $77.00 (AUD) including postage and handling within Australia.
