Senior Academics from Indonesia visit ACU’s Canberra campus

Indonesian delegates at ACU's Canberra campus

ACU’s Canberra campus recently played host to a delegation of Deans, Vice Deans and Heads of Departments from the Indonesian State Islamic University (UIN). This visit is part of Indonesia’s efforts to reform its education system such that every district in Indonesia is required to establish at least one international-standard school at each level of education (primary, secondary and tertiary).

UIN is hoping to take on learning from ACU and incorporate these learnings to produce better quality teachers who are eligible to teach in both state-funded (Negeri) and international-standard schools. Mary Gallagher, Literacy and Education Studies lecturer from ACU Education has been working with the University in Jakarta for the past 12 months – assisting them in Curriculum and syllabus development, teaching standards and pedagogy. (ACU education was awarded a ranking of at world standard in the ERA results.) She is assisting with recommendations for the further development and integration of the Islamic and conventional curriculum, including recommendations on how to expand and improve the quality of the non-religious programs offered.

The Canberra campus Dean, Assoc Prof. Patrick McArdle and Head of School of Education, Assoc Prof. Carolyn Broadbent welcomed the delegation which discussed Curriculum and Religious Education issues. Other highlights of the study tour included:
•    Mary Dorrian - Head of Religious Education and Curriculum Services for the CEO ACT will be a guest speaker on the day
•    presentations in relation to leadership, Core Curriculum and pedagogy
•    various lecturers (and students) will also share their research
•    conversations will be held with a view to collaborative research in the future.

Students shared their learning and teaching experiences while academic staff exchanged research insights and processes with the visitors. The group also visited local schools including Daramalan College and St Monica’s Primary School in ACT.
