The Peter W Sheehan Study Award, established in 2008,commemorates Professor Peter Sheehan AO, Vice-Chancellor of Australian Catholic University (ACU National) from 1998 to 2008.

This award honours our former Vice-Chancellor’s deep commitment to the University and his professional commitment to the Psychology profession.

The national School of Psychology is proud to offer this study award to a deserving and promising third-year student of psychological science. It will enable them to deepen and enrich their time at ACU National with further study.

The award commemorates Peter Sheehan’s roles as former President of the Australian Psychological Society, the International Congress of Psychology, and the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.

Peter Sheehan has demonstrated much passion about the power of education, research and psychology to improve the lives of individuals and change society for the better. He devoted significant time at ACU National to encouraging students and colleagues to recognise and develop their strengths. As well as to harness their skills and experience to work for social justice and the common good.

Professor Sheehan was also made an officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 1995 and received the Centenary Medal in 2003 for his contributions to Australian society.

Eligibility:

  • Part-time or full-time enrolment in the third year of the Bachelor of Psychological Science at ACU National
  • Satisfactory completion of at least 50 credit points in Psychology units from the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited sequence

Selection criteria:

Supplied by the University:

1. Academic achievement as demonstrated by:

  • overall Grade Point Average
  • grades achieved in Psychology units of study
  • other evidence of academic merit, such as the Dean’s List or other awards.

Supplied by the applicant:

2. Commitment to the University’s Mission evidenced by:

  • a 200 word written personal statement outlining activities undertaken that demonstrate a strong alliance to the University’s Mission
  • a signed referee report supporting the applicant’s personal statement of relevant activities.

In the event that the Selection Committee determines that there is no eligible candidate for the award, no award will be made in that year. Applications for 2009 ACU Scholarships and Bursaries are now closed.
