Australian Catholic University St Patrick’s Campus Choir under the direction of Andrew Wailes were part of ‘the premiere performance of the commissioned Mary McKillop Mass by Melbourne composer Nicholas Buc, given in Portland on 8 August. For the first time the choir went on tour, performing this celebratory work with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Portland Festival Singers at Mount Gambier as well as Portland’. This Mass was also performed at Central Hall a week later. The Choir was also part of a major public concert at Melbourne Town Hall where they joined the Royal Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra and the Melbourne University Choral Society for a performance of Haydn’s Nelson Mass and the Melbourne premiere of Karl Jenkins’s The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace. This concert was reviewed in the Age by Clive O’Connell who ‘noted that “the results were impressive with respect to carrying power and a dynamic vitality emerging from all four vocal strands’”.
