As Dean, I welcome you to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, one of four faculties at Australian Catholic University.

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences provides undergraduate and postgraduate courses for approximately 4,500 students at six campuses located in Brisbane, Canberra, North Sydney, Strathfield, Ballarat and Melbourne and at various offshore locations. Each year more than 1000 students commence in our programs and approximately 20% of our students are international students drawn from countries across the world.

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences offers students a range of highly regarded programs taught by dedicated, well-qualified staff, who are committed to student-centred teaching and the pursuit of academic excellence. A number of our staff have been recognised for their excellence in teaching. In both 2007 and 2008, the Australian Learning and Teaching Council awarded three citations to Faculty staff for outstanding contributions to student learning.

We believe that studies in the liberal arts, business and social sciences develop invaluable knowledge and skills to equip our students to meet future challenges in a rapidly changing world.

Within the Faculty, study areas include Australian studies, Asian studies, behavioural science, business, commerce, communication, counselling, design and technology, drama, economics, environmental science, geography, history, information systems, legal studies, literature, management, mathematics, media, music, psychology, social sciences, social work, visual arts and youth work. Our courses are challenging academically and responsive to society’s rapidly changing demands.

We are committed to providing our students with an excellent academic education in a friendly and supportive environment enriched with rewarding opportunities to engage with the wider community. We encourage an inclusive learning environment that celebrates diversity and tolerance and supports the values of social justice, human rights and the dignity of all persons.

The career options available to our graduates are as diverse as the graduates themselves. Our graduates are employed in management and administration, in advertising, the arts, public relations, business and commerce, as psychologists, counsellors and social workers, in church agencies, private enterprise, journalism, teaching and community services.

The liberal arts, business and social sciences challenge us to question our beliefs, actions and choices. The Faculty is committed to the conduct of research that expands human knowledge and deepens human understandings, especially in areas related to social justice. We actively encourage and support scholarly research and Faculty staff supervise students enrolled in a range of Honours programs and higher research degrees. This strong research focus provides a stimulating atmosphere for students and encourages the development of research and critical thinking skills, essential in any career.

I invite you to consider joining our community and to contact us for more information.
