The Graduate Diploma is an eight-unit course that equips students with the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills required to practice as a qualified Migration Agent in Australia. The Graduate Diploma addresses the Occupational Competency Standards for registered migration agents prescribed by the Department of Home Affairs and is the base level qualification for individuals who wish to apply to register in Australia as a Migration Agent to provide migration assistance in Australia.
Prior to 2018, a Graduate Certificate was the minimum qualification to become a registered Migration Agent. Due to changes in legislation, the new Graduate Diploma has been developed, and ACU has been approved by the Office of Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) to offer this course.
Upon successful completion of the Graduate Diploma, graduates must sit a Capstone exam administered by OMARA. There are other requirements for registration as a Migration Agent – such as being an Australian citizen or permanent resident or a New Zealand citizen who holds a special category visa. See more information.
Yes, students who were previously enrolled in the Graduate Certificate may apply to have their credits transferred to the Graduate Diploma and receive Recognition of Prior Learning for units completed as part of the Graduate Certificate.
The Graduate Diploma is designed to accommodate professionals who may need to balance the competing pressures of family, work and lifestyle.
Two intensive weekend classes at the North Sydney campus will offer a face-to-face delivery mode. However, these intensive classes can also be attended online in a highly interactive learning and teaching format for participants who are unable to attend in person. The remainder of the coursework will be completed online.
The Graduate Diploma in Australian Migration Law and Practice equips students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to practice as a qualified migration agent. This course is the minimum qualification for individuals seeking registration in Australia as a migration agent.
In addition, the Graduate Diploma provides generic, transferable, non-discipline specific employability skills including literacy, communication skills, critical thinking, and personal skills (such as time management and acting with integrity).
In addition to the Graduate Diploma, applicants must pass a Capstone assessment in order to register as a Migration Agent in Australia.
The Capstone assessment will be offered by The College of Law (Limited) from July 2018. It will be an independent assessment of the candidate’s ability to meet the Occupational Competency Standards for Registered Migration Agents.
The Capstone assessment is also open to applicants who completed the Graduate Certificate in Australian Migration Law and Practice prior to 01 January 2018. However, if you did not pass the prescribed exam that formed part of the Graduate Certificate course, or if a substantial amount of time has elapsed since completing the course, careful consideration should be given to whether you are sufficiently prepared to pass the more rigorous Capstone assessment.
The Capstone assessment is currently being developed. Further details will be posted on the OMARA website as they become available.
