Vanuatu is a developing country in the South Pacific, approximately 3 ½ hrs from Sydney by plane. Port Vila is the capital of Vanuatu on the island of Efate, and home to the country’s tertiary referral hospital. Whilst in Vila, students are accommodated at a centrally located motel, within walking distance of the supermarket, ATMs, churches, hospital, and the central market.
During this 17 day clinical attachment, students undertake a cultural village tour to learn about the Kastom and people of Vanuatu. Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Midwifery students spend one week at the hospital rotating through a range of clinical areas including Outpatients, Maternity, Paediatrics, Emergency, ENT Clinic, Paediatric Outpatients, Women’s Health, Eye Clinic, and Maternal Child Health. Paramedic students spend a significant period of their time attached to the private ambulance service, Promedical.
Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Midwifery students have a 3 night homestay experience, where they are billeted with a family in Emua Village in the north of the island of Efate. This is the base from which they travel to experience rural health care delivery as guests of the Puanangisu Health Service. This opportunity can include participation in maternal child health clinics, antenatal care, school health checks, and NCD (non-communicable disease) screening clinics, in a local village or at a dispensary on one of the neighbouring islands.
