For Department Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA)
FaHCSIA commissioned the Institute of Child Protection Studies to undertake the 'Young Women's Experiences of Motherhood and Service Use' research project.
This qualitative project aimed to help understand how becoming a mother has affected the lives of young women and their families. The social context for both young people and motherhood is changing and there is a clear need to identify the experiences and needs of young mothers (aged under 25 years at the birth of their first child). This project also aimed to find out what kind of support young mothers receive, from both family and friends and from formal services that are designed to assist them. It also aimed to find out what makes it hard for young mothers to use services and how this can be improved
