Students will undertake two placements as part of the social work degree, completing 1000 hours of practicum inclusive of seminar attendance and not inclusive of lunch breaks or travel time. They will focus on the development of social work practice skills, in a range of agency contexts.
The purpose of the Social Work Field Placement/Practicum Integrative Seminars is to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills, to test out the propositions gained from other units and to incorporate new knowledge drawn from their field placement experience in agency, organisational and community settings.
The purpose of the Social Work Field Placement/Practicum which is a minimum of 500 hours in duration, is to build on and support the objectives and outcomes of the whole curriculum. Students are expected to undertake tasks and activities during placement that will allow them to meet the AASW Practice Standards for Graduate Social Workers by the end of the final placement. Each placement provides opportunities for students to develop theory and practice skills across the main areas of social work practice including direct practice, service management, community development, organisational development and system change, policy, research and education and professional development. The mix of opportunities will vary depending on the context of placement and should be negotiated thoroughly.
