St Vincent’s Perioperative Thermal Care Collaborative

St Vincent’s Perioperative Thermal Care Collaborative is a joint project between St Vincent’s Health Australia’s Sydney and Melbourne hospital sites. The project is aimed at implementing and evaluating a thermal care bundle for the prevention of perioperative hypothermia in adult surgical patients. A care bundle comprises a small set of evidence-based recommendations that are expected to significantly improve patient outcomes when implemented together.

The project leads are Associate Professor Karen-leigh Edward (ACU), Professor Kim Walker (UTas) and Dr Jed Duff (UTas). The collaborative includes St Vincent’s Private Hospital Melbourne (Fitzroy, East Melbourne and Kew), St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney and St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney. On 1st May 2015, the Melbourne hospital sites had their official project launch which was attended by St Vincent’s Health Australia (SVHA) Group CEO Toby Hall. SVHA comprises of 5 public hospitals, 8 private hospitals and 15 Aged Care facilities across Australia.

Achievements to date include the engagement of 20 key multidisciplinary staff from all sites enlisted as “Champions” for the project, and funding has been received from St Vincent’s Clinic, NHMRC and industry support from St Vincent’s Health Australia, Mölnlycke Health Care and Device Technologies. An important international connection has been established and a Cochrane Review is in progress. This project is an excellent example of collaboration for improved patient outcomes across the SVHA healthcare group.
