High Performance Sport Intensive Week and Summer Seminar
The School of Exercise Science kicked off Semester 1 early in February with the Master of High Performance Sport and Graduate Certificate in Performance Analysis intensive weeks across the Melbourne and Strathfield campuses. The School also added the unit “Team Dynamics” as an intensive program for its Graduate Certificate in High Performance Sport Leadership.
The on campus intensive programs are invaluable for students as their courses are predominately online. During the intensive, students have the opportunity to meet School staff, guest experts, and interact with other students in their course.
Dr Blake McLean, Performance Scientist at Oklahoma City Thunder (NBA), ACU Honorary Fellow, and Guest Speaker at the intensive week said:
It provides a unique opportunity for students to gain access to, and build relationships with, academic staff and high quality industry personnel, as well as gaining practical skill development with techniques and technologies of relevance and prevalence in the industry.
In Melbourne, the intensive started with a two-day High Performance Sport Summer Seminar, which captures the external sports science community and introduces new people to ACU.
Among the world class presenters were Dr Marc Portus, Head of Movement Sciences at the Australian Institute of Sport, Neil Gibson, Director of Sport, Performance and Health at Oriam (Scottish Institute of Sport), Dr Shona Halson, Senior Physiologist at the Australian Institute of Sport, and Professor John Hawley of the Mary Mackillop Institute for Health Research.
Professor Justin Kemp, National Head, School of Exercise Science said: "The Master of High Performance Sport continues to attract a large and engaged cohort of new students, with this intensive week being the jewel in the crown. In its fourth year of delivery, greater numbers of experienced career professionals are enrolling in our Master degree, as well as our Graduate Certificates in Performance Analysis and in High Performance Sport Leadership. This indeed is evidence that ACU’s High Performance Sport suite of degrees has a strong reputation as the course of choice in the industry. What is really exciting is that many of these industry professionals are based internationally, from USA, Europe and Asia-Pacific, and from organisations like the English Premier League, the NBA, Major League Soccer and National Hockey League in the US, and the Super 15s rugby union.”
