Developing an Informed Appreciation of Literary Texts

A major aim of the Australian Curriculum: English is for students to develop a cumulative body of knowledge about language and how it works. Such knowledge can be put to work in stimulating an informed appreciation of literary texts – another key concern of the curriculum. This presentation will explore how students' understanding of traditional notions of storytelling such as plot, characterization, setting, theme, point of view and dialogue can be enriched through the study of how these are constructed in language. We will look at how teachers can guide students in developing their 'linguistic toolbox' in order to analyse, interpret, evaluate and compose literary texts.
