CE next steps:

  1. Choose your Community Engagement (CE) from the list below.
  2. Please contact the program coordinator at the organisation you have chosen for your CE. Request a signed copy of their organization's CE placement form.
  3. Please submit your signed CE placement form to your LIC for their approval.
  4. Your CE will include a briefing about what to expect at your CE and a debriefing sessions afterwards to reflect on your CE experience. These sessions help you make the most of your CE experience. Part of the briefing and debriefing includes an anonymous Student Survey. This information will be used to help us improve future students' CE experience and for research. In some instances briefing and debriefing sessions will be mandatory.

Buddy/Peer Support - MALA Mercy Adult Learning Academy (Wooloowin).
MALA is a brand new post-school service for young-adults with a disability. They have created a framework for meaningful further education for their students focussing on 3 core aspects: (1). Job Skills - through our Structured Workplace Learning program; (2). Life Skills - through the utilisation of the ASDAN Towards Independence curriculum (used in special-schools and high schools around Australia) and; (3). Leisure - again using ASDAN as a framework through which to make the activities more meaningful by building contextual learning into all that we do. MALA is a fantastic opportunity for ACU student volunteers to participate in as part of your Community Engagement program. You would be helping young adults with a disability get jobs, learn life-skills and have fun.

Students with language impairments (LI), learning disabilities (LD), and English Learners who are at-risk for language difficulties (EL-AR) (here after referred to as children with language learning difficulties, LLD) often experience difficulty accessing the literacy curriculum in the regular classroom. The Study Groups cater to primary and secondary aged students from the local area. In this program, ACU students would work with the local staff to offer education in an informal and formal setting to children and young adults (5-18) who are at risk of living on the margins.
