Pope Francis and other Prophetic Voices

Calling Us to Reshape the Public Sphere

The Conference "Pope Francis and other Prophetic Voices: Calling Us to Reshape the Public Sphere" on September 17th -18th 2015 invites people from all walks of life, all faith traditions and people more generally to listen to the prophetic message of Pope Francis and others who are calling for a profound transformation of public discourse, governance and citizenship within and between countries.

We need to get to know each other, listen to each other and improve our knowledge of the world around us.

Sometimes after a meeting I want to arrange another one because new ideas are born and I discover new needs.

This is important: to get to know people, listen, expand the circle of ideas.

The prophetic leadership of Pope Francis, building on the work of his predecessors, has engaged with the world today, and has brought the Gospel challenge to the attention of people from all parts of the globe.

The Australian Catholic University with the support of a number of other Church organisations, including the Anglican Diocese, the Uniting Church and the Victorian Council of Churches, is organising a national conference around the theme Pope Francis and other Prophetic Voices - Calling Us to Reshape the Public Sphere to be held on 16-18 September 2015.

We see Pope Francis as challenging people of faith and all people of good will to renew their commitment to the public good. We see the Conference as an opportunity to think through in some depth how we can reshape the public space in this country and so make it a society that is inclusive, just and welcoming when it comes to dispossessed, the poor and the vulnerable.

The Conference is open not just to Catholics or other Christians, but to people of all faiths and persuasions. Our aim is to reach teachers, educators and students, theology and religious studies specialists, academics, public servants and diplomats, politicians and their staff, those working in business, health, law, the media and other professions, those active in social movements, community groups and youth organisations.

Post conference conversations and reflections will ensure together we continue to action conference outcomes.

These days there is a lot of poverty in the world, and that's a scandal when we have so many riches and resources to give to everyone.
