Associate Professor Peter Howard

Associate Professor Peter Howard from the University's Faculty of Education has a sustained commitment to community engagement at ACU with his involvement in:
- developing humanities programs for the poor and homeless with the St Vincent de Paul Society-Mission Australia;
- his ongoing work with St Mary’s Province of the Christian Brothers;
- supporting Indigenous people; and,
- extending the focus and vision of the students at ACU through social justice community outreach placements.
Peter’s efforts, has helped to challenge the ACU community to look further and become more fully engaged with the wider community.
Peter is wholeheartedly committed to the Indigenous people of Australia, and especially those living in the rural communities of New South Wales: Moree, Kempsey, Gilgandra, Armidale and Bourke. ‘Just a quiet calm approach to listening to the voices of Aboriginal people as we walk the journey of education’ is how he describes what he does. His focus is on meeting the aspirations of the young, respecting the expectations of parents and working to help fulfill the hopes of the community.
Peter believes that ACU is uniquely placed to influence public policy through the collaborative and research based engagement with community. The expertise of the University staff and the purposefulness of the learning environment provide opportunities for initiation and engagement with various communities to bring about beneficial change for people both nationally and internationally.
