Winners 2010 Community Engagement Awards

Vice-Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Community Engagement
The winner of the 2010 Vice-Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Community Engagement is the Refugee Program on the Thai-Burma border. Read More >>
The Australian Catholic University Refugee Program on the Thai-Burma Border provides Burmese refugees and migrants with quality, accredited tertiary education.
The key stakeholders in the program are Australian Catholic University (through Mr Duncan MacLaren, Coordinator, ACU Refugee Program in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences), the Refugee Tertiary Education Committee – an initiative of the Australian Jesuits, Marist Mission Ranong, and York University.

Ranong Computer Room
The program generates hope in the disadvantaged communities which it services: many of the graduates who remain in Thailand continue to work for refugees and migrants, while those who resettle in third countries are able to gain entry to university with a scholarship on the basis of their ACU testamur.
This educational initiative exemplifies sustained and strategic involvement of partner organisations in Australia and internationally and is an inspiration to other universities and institutions to follow suit in protracted refugee situations. Through the research it generates, it reinforces advocacy efforts on behalf of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, non-governmental organisations and governments to do more for tertiary education for refugees.

Staff Award for Outstanding Community Engagement
The winner of the 2010 Staff Award for Outstanding Community Engagement is Dr Tracey Sanders, Senior Lecturer, School of Arts & Sciences from the Brisbane Campus (McAuley at Banyo) Read More >>
The award to Dr Tracey Sanders recognises the way in which she has, through drama and storytelling, facilitated ongoing community engagement of marginalised groups such as older Australians and other people who are disadvantaged, including presenting the distinctive ways such engagement and hope are integral to the story of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop.
Since 2008, Dr Sanders has worked with Clemente students, with Australian Catholic University students and seniors at The Golden Years Seniors Centre at Nundah, and the Sisters of St Joseph (Queensland) to produce a series of performances, culminating in the story of Mary MacKillop, which was performed in Rome in association with the canonization in 2010. Dr Sanders' work gives the marginalised a 'voice' and documents their lives as archival treasures. Through shared artistic collaboration, research, teaching and learning, she develops new ways to view faith, spirituality and community, and offers life-changing experiences to those who participate.

Student Award for Outstanding Community Engagement
The winner of the 2010 Student Award for Outstanding Community Engagement is Ms Tahlia Seymour, a Bachelor of Nursing student at St Patrick's Campus. Read More >>
Ms Tahlia Seymour, a Bachelor of Nursing student at St Patrick's Campus, has worked as a volunteer in Cambodia with Lighthouse Orphanage, Love in Action (Children's Home) and Missionaries of Charity (Orphanage) and with street kids. Her commitment has been exceptional, representing sustained and creative individual community engagement over five years.
Ms Seymour's fundraising, which is explicitly directed to supporting and sustaining medical, educational and practical interventions, has changed the lives of Cambodian children, while her experiences in Cambodia have increased her own spiritual, social and professional development, and her commitment to nursing and to helping others achieve their best.
The 2011 Community Engagement Awards will open for nominations on October 1st and close October 28th 2011
