ACU was the first university in Australia to submit community engagement as an audit theme to AUQA. The audit was highly successful.

AUQA in its "Report of an Audit of Australian Catholic University – November 2008" said:

" A striking aspect of the conceptualisation of community engagement at ACU has been its focus on social justice. Rooted in Catholic social teaching, community engagement is a distinguishing feature of ACU as a Catholic university... A large proportion of the University's activities undertaken by staff and students are in partnership, and support those who are socially disadvantaged, excluded or poor. Staff and students are actively encouraged to be involved in initiatives which have a social justice dimension."

The audit recognised that ACU "aspires to explicitly engage with 'the social, ethical and religious dimensions of the questions it faces in teaching and research, and service.' It focuses on 'placing values at the heart of its academic pursuits.'
