Information Literacy

The Library's core objectives for information literacy are based on the information literacy definition and competencies adopted by Australian Catholic University and include:

Introduction to the library and information services
Students will be made familiar with the physical Library environment and services and with their rights and responsibilities.
Introduction to the library catalogue
Students will be introduced to the range of facilities available through the Library catalogue including locating items, placing holds and checking personal loan records. The importance of these services to facilitate the student's responsible participation and personal empowerment will be emphasised.
Introduction to a wider range of information service providers (reciprocal borrowing)
Students will be introduced to the reciprocal borrowing schemes available to them, e.g. the National Borrowing Scheme for borrowing from other university libraries. Their rights and responsibilities as participants in these schemes will be outlined.
Introduction to the library website
Students will be introduced to the range of electronic services and resources available through the library website.
Introduction to research
Working collaboratively, where possible with academic staff, introduce students to basic research skills centred on specific topics or assignments. Research skills to be addressed include:
  • formulating research strategies through; defining and limiting the topic, identifying keywords, determining information requirements
  • assessing retrieved information, including its appropriateness, its currency and its accuracy.
Introduction to electronic databases
Database education will include:
  • explanation of differences between databases in terms of subject coverage, scope and types, e.g. full-text versus citation databases.
  • training in basic searching techniques
  • pointers on how to quickly assess the suitability of retrieved information
  • how to locate and retrieve identified citations
Introduction to the internet
Training in basic searching techniques. Emphasis will be placed on the need for students to develop their skills in information assessment, given the wide range of material available on the web.
