Help - Catalogue searching

Below are self-paced tutorials to help you search the catalogue. You will need Flash software to view them. Free Flash software is available to download, follow the icon "software" at the bottom of this screen.

Keyword Search
"Keywords" Search is the default search. Use this option if you are looking for resources on a particular topic. Use a single word or multiple words, to find all of the words, in any order, anywhere in the record. Build a search strategy using a "Keywords" Search plus operators AND, OR and NOT; for example:

  • flowers or flora
  • tertiary and education
  • women and violence
  • violence not domestic
  • television and media and children

If you know an exact title, select the "Title begins with" Search. Disregard initial articles: the, a, an. For example, for title "The longest journey" just type longest journey.

Author Search
If you have an author's name, select the "Author Surname begins with" search. Type the surname first followed by the name or initial/s, for example Woods, Laurence or Woods, L.

Author/Title search
Select "Keyword" Search and type the author's surname and one word from the title. To find a book by Stephen Hawking called Brief History of Time type, hawking time.

For multiple authors select the "Author Keywords" Search option and type the author's surnames separated by commas.  To find Clinical handbook of pastoral counseling, edited by Robert Wicks, Richard Parsons, Donald Capps, type: Wicks, Parsons, Capps.

Subject search
If you want information on a subject and know the exact subject, select the "Subject begins with" search, for example, Child abuse; Advocacy; Australia History.

You can ask your librarian to assist you with locating proper subject headings.
