Learn about the approved Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) here, including what to expect, costs, when and where you can sit the test, and where to find support

Test background

The Australian Government introduced literacy and numeracy tests for initial teacher education students (LANTITEs) in 2016.

Students completing a teaching degree in ACT, NSW, Qld and Vic must sit and pass a LANTITE

Even if you don't want to go straight into teaching, you need to pass a LANTITE in order to successfully complete your course and graduate.

Information on the LANTITE such as Test Dates, how to register, costs and results are available on the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) website.

Test overview

The ACER LANTITE is made up of two parts: a literacy part and a numeracy part.

Each part has 65 questions, with a mixture of multiple choice and constructed response questions.

You need to pass both to successfully complete the test; however, you can choose to sit each part separately or together in the same test window sitting.

If you pass one part of the test but fail the other, you will only need to re-sit the failed part to be deemed as successful.

Taking the test

When you're ready to sit the test, you should register and prepare. You are personally required to register and pay. The ACER LANTITE is externally administered and managed.

Testing centres are located in all capital cities and a number of metropolitan and regional centres. https://teacheredtest.acer.edu.au/register/test-centres

You can choose to register to sit the test in a test centre or, sit the test by remote proctoring. This involves sitting the test under live supervision using your own computer in a suitable location with internet connectivity. Please be familiar with the privacy rules around remote proctoring

For more information on test centres, including locations, remote proctoring, registration, how to book and what to bring, visit the Australian Council for Education Research (ACER) website.

Special testing conditions and reasonable adjustment

If you have a disability or a health condition that might interfere with your ability to sit the test, or wish to request a reasonable adjustment you must approach ACER prior to the scheduled testing window to seek approval or adjustments.

After you apply, you will need to submit supporting documentation for your request to the Australian Council of Education Research (ACER) via email teacheredtest@acer.org

Learn more by visiting the special testing conditions page or Reasonable Adjustments on the ACER website

Resitting the test

All students enrolled in an initial teacher education course (either undergraduate or postgraduate) will be expected to sit and meet the test standard prior to graduation. You have up to three opportunities to sit the test. You only need to demonstrate once that you have met the standard for each test component (literacy and numeracy). Test results do not expire.

Test Dates and Results

There are four test dates available each year. Please note the unique registration periods for each testing window. Go to the ACER Test Dates webpage for more specific information.

Results for each Test Window are available here.

Support from ACU

There is an expectation that you will pass the test in your first attempt. Students are required to participate in the LNTE110 or LNTE511 Diagnostic Assessment which is facilitated under test conditions and closely mirrors the content and Test Bands of the ACER LANTITE. Students are assessed on their participation in the Diagnostic assessment and the feedback informs students on areas of improvement to meet the required standard of achievement of the ACER LANTITE. ACU also provides a range of resources on the Canvas LANTITE support site to support your preparation that you are strongly urged to undertake prior to your first attempt at the test.
